News and Updates for August 23rd!

Welcome back to school everyone! Now we start our regular rehearsal schedule: Mon--2:30-3:30; Tues.--2:30 - 5:15; Wed.--5:30 - 8:30; Thur--2:30 - 5:15; Fri.--2:30 - 5:15. This is the general schedule until November when rehearsals end. As is the nature of multiple people trying to run a calendar. . . .things will pop up and change. Communicate with your student and read our emails. They are meant to convey information.

Color Guard also has practice Mon: 6:00-8:00PM

THIS JUST IN: Parkway South Spirit Night has been moved to Thursday, Sept. 2, in line with our 1st home football game.

As of right now, here is the current schedule:

Monday, Aug. 23--Spirit of 76 Rehearsal 2:30-3:30 in the band room. Please make every effort to get your student a ride at 3:30. Leaders should be checking with their sections to make sure everyone can get home. We will try this schedule for a couple of weeks to see if it will work now that there is no 3:30 activity bus. I will be staying until 5:30 in case students cannot get a ride, but I ask you to be respectful of my time, as I am trying to be of yours, and help your student find a ride. If this schedule just doesn't work, we will revisit the schedule.

Tuesday, Aug. 24--Spirit of 76 rehearsal 2:30 - 5:15. Plan to go outside. Mr. Wall and I keep a close look at the Wet Bulb Index, but always plan to go outside. There is a 5:30 activity bus available for students who do not have rides.

Wednesday, Aug. 25--Spirit of 76 rehearsal 5:30 - 8:30 pm. This is our night to use the varsity football field. Sometimes we do have to work around MSHSAA sports, but plan to be on the field.

Thursday, Aug. 26--Spirit of '76 rehearsal 2:30 - 5:15.

Friday, Aug. 27--Spirit of '76 rehearsal 2:30 - 5:15

Monday, Aug. 30--Spirit of '76 Rehearsal 2:30 - 3:30

Tuesday, Aug. 31--Spirit of '76 Rehearsal 2:30 - 5:15

Wednesday, Sept. 1--Spirit of 76 Rehearsal 5:30 - 8:30

Thursday, Sept. 2--Spirit Night/Home Football Game (details when I get them)--plan to wear uniforms unless the weather is too hot, then we'll go with Pep Band tshirts and some sort of shorts or pants on the bottom (not looking for the kids to have to go shopping)

Save the Date:

9/7: Spirit of '76 regular rehearsal

9/8: Spirit of '76 regular rehearsal (There is also the virtual open house this night, it will most likely alter the rehearsal somehow)

9/9: Spirit of '76 regular rehearsal

9/10: Spirit of'76 regular rehearsal

9/11: Manchester Homecoming Parade/Rehearsal with Parent Preview

Updates for this week

We are still in band camp! We have heard that other bands have had some issues with Covid. We must make sure that we are following protocol during camp. Make sure that you have a mask and wear it any time you are indoors. Outdoors, the mask is still optional. Stay 3 feet apart from others when you are not doing structured activity.

This week our camp is in the afternoon and evening. Schedule:Aug. 9-13: Band Camp 2-8 pm. Afternoons inside for music and evenings outdoors for drill. Weather will be a factor this week. We are keeping an eye on the wet bulb index and will not be outside if it reaches 92 degrees. This is per MSHSAA and Mercy Health guidelines for heat safety. Be sure your student has something packed to eat during our dinner break.

Aug. 12: 8:00 pm--Band Olympics. Sections go head to head in intense "competition" with win-it-in-a-minute games in a great way to get to know each other.

Aug. 13: 8:00 pm--Band (Lack of) Talent Show. Students show off their random talents and recap their time at band camp.

Normally these activities happen at Camp Woodland Hills and we want to keep tradition going.

Aug. 14: Media Day--Students come to South at 11:00 am to get into uniform. We will take an official band picture at 12:00 pm for programs and yearbook. After pictures students will need to hang up their uniform then they are free to go.

Aug. 16: Band Rehearsal 2:30-5:15. South High

Aug. 17: Band Rehearsal 2:30 - 5:15 South High

Aug. 18: Band Rehearsal 2:30 - 5:15 South High

Aug. 19: Band Rehearsal 2:30 - 5:15 South High

Aug. 23: First Day of School. Help you student pack for the day. They will have all of their classes and have band rehearsal after school.

This is when we begin our regular rehearsal schedule:Mondays: 2:30 - 3:30

Tuesdays: 2:30-5:15

Wednesdays: 5:30-8:30

Thursdays: 2:30-5:15

Fridays: 2:30-5:15 (if no football game)

Thursday, Aug. 26: Spirit Night. 3:30-7:30. We'll probably wear band camp t-shirts and shorts, tennis shoes. This is all I know.

Physical_Privit Information 2021-2022. This is information just sent to us from the AD. It is very possible that they will come after us if a student does not have the physical or Privit information submitted and that students will NOT be allowed to participate in rehearsals until the paperwork is done.

Uniform Help

From Sarah Brueggeman (Band Booster President)
I need help in the uniform room at noon on 8/13 until we have all of the students fitted. Should not be too long if we have a solid two hours to arrange the uniform room accordingly. I noted Alex Miller, Shannon Schroeder Meriwether, Terry Cancila as a few folks that may be available- will take the hands I can get. If you can help, even for a few hours, please post here and join me in the uniform room on 8/13 at noon.

Also will need a few sewing helpers to sew some very large buttons for the show itself. More to come on that.

Band Camp Info

We want to remind everyone that that camp starts on Aug. 2 at 8:30 am. Students need to be on time and ready to go. The day will consist of morning rehearsal outside doing physical warm-up, drill work and learning the drill for the show.

Monday, Aug. 2 - Friday Aug. 6: Band Camp for Spirit of 76.

Location: South High Band Room.

Time: 8:30 am. Bring food for a lunch break. Outside from 8:30 - 11:30; lunch 11:30 - 12:30; inside from 12:30 - 3:30.

Recommended items students should have/bring for band camp:

Hat

Sunglasses

Light colored shirt

Athletic shorts or shorts you can move in

Socks

Athletic tennis shoes with good tread and arch support (Vans, Converse chucks, etc. usually cause blisters--not really good for marching)

Sunscreen

Bug spray

As large a water container as you can find (put ice in at home then fill with water, the ice will keep you water cold longer)

Your instrument

All music you have been given in a folder with page protectors

A mini notebook (for dot book)

Pencil(s)

A light jacket or sweatshirt for indoor rehearsals

There will be an hour for lunch from 11:30 to 12:30. It is recommended that students bring a lunch so they can rest and recover in the air conditioned band room.

12:30 - 3:30 will be spent inside working on music for the show, parade and other pep tunes.

Aug. 9 - 13: Band Camp for Spirit of 76

Location: South High Band Room

Time: CHANGE!!!! 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Bring food for a dinner break. Inside from 2:00 - 4:45, dinner break 4:45-5:30; outside from 5:30 - 8:00. This change allows our color guard staff to be included into the camp.

The second week (Aug. 9-13) we will alter the schedule so we can see more of our auxiliary staff. Rehearsals will start at 2:00 pm and go until 8:00 pm with a break for dinner around 4:30. Again it is recommended that students bring food as this break will be shorter. Afternoons will be spent learning music and work (guard) inside and evenings will be outside.

Aug. 16: Spirit of 76--Band Rehearsal: 2:30 - 5:15

Aug. 16: Symphonic Band/Percussion--Find your instrument, be sure it is in playing order, if not, take it to the music store for repair. Have a metronome and tuner on your phone. These can be found in the Apple Store or through Google Apps. Many are free!

Aug. 17: Spirit of 76--Band Rehearsal: 2:30 - 5:15

Aug. 18: Spirit of 76--Band Rehearsal 2:30 - 5:15

Aug. 19: Spirit of 76--Band Rehearsal 2:30 - 5:15

Due to St. Louis County instituting a mask mandate, we WILL be requiring masks to be worn while inside the school building, even if you are fully vaccinated. Outside, masks are optional (as far as we know)

Attention: There have been rumors that we may be short bus drivers and activity buses may not be offered. Please talk with your marcher about transportation to and from rehearsal. If you are a leader, please consider finding a younger student who may not drive yet and helping them get to and from practice.

I will try to keep you up to date on all things band weekly, this should include 2 weeks of events with as much info as I know, plus a 3rd week of "save the date" type knowledge. I am also in the process of updating our Google Classroom and Facebook page. In order to be as "green" as possible, I do not plan to print anything unless asked to do so. Please know that you are welcome to print anything you wish, including the calendar found at Spirit76.net under the Schedule on the menu bar.

We will also be starting a fund-raiser during band camp. We will need each student to come to a designated day of camp with 20 emails of people they would like to ask for help in funding their band fees. Avoid your parents, they are already helping. If you can't come up with 20, bring as many as you can think of. Ask your parents for some of their friend's emails, I bet they would love to help out their friend's child.

See you Monday!

Band Booster Meeting

If your child is in the band at Parkway South, you are officially a Band Booster member. With that special membership comes bespoke perks like being invited to exclusive meetings with the Band and Color Guard Directors to learn about the upcoming year - exciting dates, camp, festivals, costs, fundraisers (to keep those costs down - most of this is an AWESOME craft fair!), and how you can get more involved to make your student's band experience even more memorable and enjoyable in the coming year.

Please join us this coming Tuesday evening for a short 30 minutes with the team to discuss the State of the Band 2021-2022 school year, upcoming dates, summer camp, support opportunities and ways to get to know your fellow band parents and enrich your student's experience. For further Q&A opportunities, please keep an eye out for details regarding the 4/24/2021 marching introduction at the school.

Zoom details are below. We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Sarah Brueggeman

Band Opportunity

Dear Parkway South Band Families,

This spring the Parkway South Bands is offering two opportunities for current 8th-11th graders to experience our marching band program, the Spirit of 76!  On Saturday, April 24th and Saturday, May 22nd, students are invited to come and see what the Spirit of 76 is all about.  These rehearsals, which run from 8:00AM until noon at the Parkway South stadium, are open to all band students whether they've participated in our marching program before or not.

We'd like to make it clear that participation at these events is in no way a commitment to performing with us next fall, but we think that every band student in the South program should get a chance to try this exciting part of our program first hand.  For parents with questions about the Spirit of 76, our parent booster organization will be available to field any questions starting at 11:00 on these Saturdays.

It's our hope to see you all on the turf this spring giving the Spirit of 76 a try!  Please don't hesitate to contact band directors Lisa Kinworthy (lkinworthy@parkwayschools.net) or Matthew Wall (mwall@parkwayschools.net) with any questions
